History

Founding and Location
In 1953, ASM was founded in Riehen as the first Swiss company specializing in the independent and neutral contract filling of spray cans. The expansion to Möhlin in 1964 marked the beginning of a dynamic growth phase that increasingly made the Fricktal location the center of our operations. In 1980, the company finally relocated entirely from Riehen to Möhlin. Since 1995, the company has been owned by a group of private shareholders who support its long-term, independent development. Today, we are making targeted investments in the further expansion of our facility, thereby creating space for innovation, modern workplaces, and sustainable growth.
Production and Technology
Technological progress has been a hallmark of ASM from the very beginning: As early as 1966, we commissioned our first filling line for pharmaceutical products, followed in 1982 by the development of the patented Bag-on-Valve system. Since then, we have continuously expanded our mixing, filling, and packaging capacities—including flexible, multi-purpose systems for aerosols and liquids, as well as modern production areas operating under cleanroom and GMP conditions. Development, pilot, and full-scale plants enable efficient scaling from the first product batch through to commercial production. Serialization systems, leak detectors, and digitally supported warehouse processes ensure end-to-end control and traceability. Complemented by a validated ERP system, a modern LIMS, and a high-performance IT infrastructure, we combine decades of experience with cutting-edge technology.
Infrastructure
Our infrastructure has grown over the decades in tandem with the needs of our customers and markets. From the initial expansions of our production and warehouse facilities, to our own rail connection for propellant gas delivery, to modern high-bay, hazardous materials, and temperature-controlled warehouses, we have continuously developed our Möhlin site. Today, high-bay pharmaceutical warehouses, cold-chain solutions, and specialized refrigerated areas enable the safe and controlled storage of a wide variety of raw materials and finished goods. With the addition of another story to one of the buildings and an expansion of the floor space by approximately 1,400 square meters, new offices, a modern quality control laboratory, and a HIPO laboratory with separate personnel and material airlocks were also created starting in 2020. Current renovation projects are gradually bringing all buildings up to the latest technical standards and ensuring the future viability of our site.
Sustainability and Energy
Sustainability has been firmly anchored in ASM’s corporate development for many years: Since 2014, we have been continuously reducing our energy consumption and CO₂ emissions through targeted programs—and have even exceeded our original energy-saving goals. Over the past ten years, we have saved 1,450 metric tons of CO₂ and 5,627 MWh of energy. With the introduction of a comprehensive environmental management system and the 2023 Ökoprofit certification, we expanded our focus to include resource efficiency, water consumption, and proper waste disposal. Our photovoltaic systems generate approximately 660,000 kWh of electricity, covering about 23 percent of our total electricity needs.
Quality and Safety
Quality and safety have been the foundation of our operations since the very beginning of our pharmaceutical production. With our first drug manufacturing license from Swissmedic in 1975, we began systematically building a comprehensive quality management system, which is now supported by GMP and certifications under ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and ISO 22716. Successful audits and inspections by regulatory authorities from Switzerland, the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Russia, and the Gulf States confirm our commitment to international standards. State-of-the-art quality control laboratories, validated processes, serialization, leak detectors, and controlled cold chains ensure safety and traceability throughout the entire production process. Investments in hazardous materials storage facilities, explosion-proof areas, and an additional transformer station further strengthen operational and supply chain security.
